The Students' Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL) was founded in 1988 by a group of young Ladakhis with the aim to reform the educational system of Ladakh. Today our activities are extremely varied and numerous. We organize activities for Ladakhi youth, run a campus for students going to school or college in Leh, develop solar energy projects and much more.We accept volunteers at various times during the year.

Basic Solar and Thermal Concept for Masons and Carpenters
Four day workshop on basic solar and thermal concept for about 20 carpenters and masons took place on Phey campus . Four NGO’s and other proxy NGO’s in Lahoul and Leh conducted the workshop. Under this project 1000 solar buildings are to be constructed in four years. The main aim of the project is to combat the climate change by improving the mode of space heating. One of the most polluting and energy consuming things in Asia is space heating. Therefore, one of the measures to create comfortable living space while being energy efficient is to use solar energy or by building energy efficient buildings. Solar Building disagrees with the following issues:

A.Heating cost of a conventional or an ordinary building is high
B.Construction materials becoming costlier
C.People suffer from respiratory diseases and other joint pain
D.Collecting fuel wood or dung is Labor intensive work
E.No handicraft work can be done.
F.Useless debris left behind when concrete building is to collapse to rebuild
G.Transportation cost of building material becomes high
So,Why don't we choose to build Solar Buildings? Because the problems given above are not invited by the solar building but rather solar buildings help almost all the seen or unseen problems around us.Because in solar buildings most of the building materials are gathered from the construction site and surroundings.
Participants: Five of the participants from this workshop were from Lahoul Spiti Kyelong and others were from Leh district.

Guest speaker for the workshop were:
Tsewang Norphel (glacier man) and Sonam Wanchuk, Founder and Ex-Director of SECMOL
